IFR's 2025 Medical Robot Figures: Surgical Sales and Market Scope

Medical robot sales grew in 2025, while surgical systems were reported as a particularly fast-growing application, according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). The figures are market statistics, not evidence that a particular procedure or device is appropriate for a patient. This article explains what the reported numbers cover and which conclusions need additional clinical or regulatory evidence.

Identify the publication and observation years

In its World Robotics 2026 service robot release, IFR reports that medical robot sales grew by 19% in 2025. It also reports 8,400 surgical robots sold in that year, with growth of 57% for that application. The press release describes 2025 activity; its 2026 publication date should not be mistaken for the data year.

The 19% and 57% figures have different scopes. The former concerns the medical robot segment as reported by IFR; the latter concerns surgical robots. They should not be used interchangeably or described as the growth rate of every medical robot application. The public release does not provide enough detail to infer an individual manufacturer's sales.

Keep sales separate from procedures

A unit sale is an equipment market measure. It is not a count of surgeries, patients treated or clinical outcomes. One installed system may be used for different numbers of procedures depending on the institution and application. Conversely, an announcement about a clinical procedure does not establish that a new unit was sold in that year.

When a news article discusses a specific device, it should identify the manufacturer, model, intended use and jurisdiction and cite the relevant primary evidence. A sector-wide growth rate does not establish that a device is approved everywhere or suitable for a particular medical decision. Readers should consult qualified clinicians and the appropriate regulator for those questions.

Compare reports with their own definitions

IFR's World Robotics 2025 service robot executive summary states that close to 16,700 medical robots were registered as sold in 2024 and reports growth for that segment. That is a separate report and observation year. Before calculating a trend across editions, check the full methodology, categories, revisions and any differences in the participating companies.

The executive summary describes medical robots separately from the top application groups for professional service robots. A figure for transportation or logistics should therefore not be substituted for the medical segment's total. Likewise, the 8,400 surgical units in the 2026 press release are a particular application figure, not automatically the complete medical market.

Interpret a growth rate with its base

A high percentage increase describes change relative to an earlier value; it does not by itself show the absolute size of a market or the number of hospitals involved. A small base can produce a large percentage change, but the published growth rate alone does not tell readers why the change occurred. Attribution requires the original report or other direct evidence.

As a hypothetical illustration, a category increasing from 100 to 150 units grows by 50%, while another increasing from 1,000 to 1,100 grows by 10%. The second adds more units despite the lower percentage. These invented numbers explain the arithmetic and are not IFR data.

A report may also use rounded figures and revise earlier estimates as additional information becomes available. When reproducing a comparison, use the values and definitions from a consistent edition and state whether the result is an independent calculation. If only a rounded press figure is available, avoid implying greater precision than the source supports. The original report may contain details about data collection and participating companies that are not included in the public news release.

Separate market reporting from clinical claims

The IFR release discusses market adoption and includes general commentary on clinical outcomes. A sales statistic cannot independently establish effectiveness, safety or superiority for a particular procedure. Those claims require appropriately designed clinical studies, regulatory information and expert interpretation. A news summary should not turn a market trend into a recommendation for treatment.

Medical systems can also serve different purposes, including surgery, rehabilitation or other clinical tasks depending on the classification used. A comparison needs to identify the application rather than treating all devices as interchangeable. The market report's categories are useful for the scope it defines, while a patient's care decision depends on their condition, the specific technology and a clinician's assessment. This article does not evaluate a device or recommend a procedure.

Record the source edition, publication date, observation year, segment and units when building a chart. If a later edition revises historical data, note the change and avoid silently combining inconsistent versions. Missing category details should remain unknown rather than being inferred from a headline.

Our article on reporting the distinction between releases and preliminary figures and the robotics news collection provide related context. Clear scope lets readers follow a market story without mistaking it for individualized medical guidance.
